The importance of institutional credit in boosting the rural economy has been clear to the Government of India since the early planning stages. Therefore, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), at the insistence of the Government of India, set up a Committee to Review the Institutional Credit Arrangements for Agriculture and Rural Development (CRAFICARD) to consider these very critical issues.
